Henry goes to West Virginia!

Henry and Rachel traveled all the way to West Virginia for an early Thanksgiving celebration. While we were there, we visited the Homer Laughlin China Company in Newel, West Viriginia. They sell the poplar Fiesta Dinnerware. This outlet store had a room of place settings, glasses, vases, pitchers, and silverware. They also had a room in the back that had only "seconds". The "seconds" are less than perfect plates, bowls, cups, pitchers, and vases. Everything in the back room in half price. Henry and I searched for the best "seconds" we could find.

Henry goes to U of I

Henry and I, Monica May, went to the University of Illinois this past weekend. We were visiting friends and were there when their football team beat the number one ranked, Ohio State team. It was all very exciting. We walked around campus to see how it varies from SIU's. Henry found one building in common with his home school, they had an Altgeld building. This is the oldest building on U of I's campus. If you take this building, the one at SIU, one at Northern Illinois University, one at Eastern Illinois University, and the one at Illinois State, and put them together, they supposedly would be a replication of a castle in England.

Henry Goes to Indianapolis

I, Denell Scott, took Henry with me to a conference in Indianapolis, Indiana for my organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Henry was very excited because he was surrounded by girls the entire weekend! When we arrived at the hotel, Henry and I took a quick tour and were pretty pleased with our room. The next morning, Henry decided to rest in the room while I attended workshops and meetings for my conference. When I got back to the room, Henry was well rested so I decided to take him to the mall with me and my sorority sisters. After a long weekend, both Henry and I were ready to get back to Carbondale.

Henry Goes to the Body World Exhibit at the St. Louis Science Center

I, Christine Kegel, and Henry had a busy weekend. We started off by going to Immanuel Lutheran School in Murphysboro. I thought Henry would enjoy coming with me to work with the after school students. At Immanuel, Henry had the chance to make some colorful creations out of play-doh. He had never played with play-doh before and found it to be very fun. The students helped him and enjoyed his company.

On Saturday Henry and I traveled to St. Louis to go to the Science Center. He had never been there so he was extremely excited. When we arrived we went directly to the Body World exhibit because we had tickets. This exhibit was something amazing to see. Henry and I learned a lot about different muscles and organs of the human body. After viewing the exhibit we walked around the rest of the Science Center and had a great time learning. We both hope to go back again soon.
Henry had such a good time at Immanuel Lutheran School on Friday he decided he would like to go back on Monday as well. This time we made some beautiful works of art using watercolors. He was really careful not to get any paint on himself. The students were very impressed with his skills as a painter.

Henry is a Shark?!

I, Rebecca Owen, took Henry with me to Pinckneyville Elementary School today. He wanted to meet the 4th grade class I will be student teaching next sememster. Since today is Halloween, I read a Halloween story to the class and we did an alliteration activity together. Henry loved being in 4th grade, and the students really loved learning about Henry's travels so far!
After resting for a bit, Henry needed help with his costume before trick-or-treating. Henry dressed up as a shark for Halloween. We went to Ava, IL where my friend and I took her little girl Katie, and their cousin Rachel trick-or-treating. Katie was Lucy from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Rachel was Hannah Montana. Henry even enjoyed hearing Rachel sing "Best of Both Worlds", the Hannah Montana theme song, over and over. The girls loved meeting Henry and helping him learn the ropes when it comes to getting candy! I think Henry had a spooktacular Halloween!

Henry can ride horses????

Henry traveled to the Interstate Center in Bloomington, Illinois to view and help me at my horse show. Henry decided that riding horses was pretty fun. If you look closely you will see him in the saddle on the horse. Henry also brought me good luck and I ended up doing pretty well. Henry found it funny that I called him my good luck charm. In return he said I should take him to all of my horse shows.

Henry braves the cool fall weather for a trip to MVTHS!

Henry and I visited Mount Vernon Township High School in Mount Vernon, Illinois on October 10, 2007. We drove to the campus because of the cool fall weather. Otherwise, we would have walked because I only live a block from the high school.
We walked around the historic campus and decided to take a break for a impromptu photo shoot in front of 'B' building. 'B' building is over 100 years old! Henry told me that 'B' building was the original high school, and throughout the years they have added 10 other buildings to accommodate the growing town of Mount Vernon.
After our photo shoot, we visited my mother's classroom and visited with her students. I told the class all about Henry and his adventures throughout the semester. They were pretty impressed!
Henry is excited for his next adventure...i wonder where he will go next?

Henry and Rachel's Journey

Henry visited the Frankfort Area Historical Museum on Wednesday, October 3, 2007. We looked through the museum, and ate lunch.

The museum building used to be an elementary school. Today, each room has a them and is set up with specific artifacts that go along with the theme. One room is set up like a classroom from the past. There are desks, model teacher and students, and even a lesson on the board. The muesum is taken care of by a few volunteers. The volunteers serve lunch every Wednesday to raise money for the museum. They have given tours upon request.

The coordinates of the museum are (lat.) 37.90, and (long.) -88.90.

Henry traveled by car, from SIU to West Frankfort, Illinois. This trip he traveled a total of 58.72 miles.

Henry has gone a total of 2,275.86 miles this semester.

Salem's Sweetie

Henry and I tooka trip to Salem, IL in search of some action and some fun. What we found there was amazing, all Henry could say was bow, wow, WOW! We started our journey ar the William Jennings Bryan statue. Have you ever heard of Charles Darwin? Bryan was a very important trial lawyer who presided in the Darwin evolution trials. Apparently, the statue was housed in Washington D.C. for sometime, but residents of this small town decided that Bryan was theres and petitioned to have the statue errcted in Salem some 25 years ago. After seeing the statue, we just knew this small town had some history to share with me, and we wanted to dig it up. We then traveled to a one-room school house memorial of Marion County, but we couldn't go inside. However, there were some really cool bells outside that I bet made a lot of noise. Our favorite part of the trip took place only a few short miles out of Iuka, IL where we were able to see an old tavern. This tavern was also known as a halfway house and according to local residents, it marked the spot between St. Louis and Louisville. Apparently, travelers would stop and rest at the tavern on long journeys and it was even rumored that Abraham Lincoln had stayed there. We wanted to go inside, but the condition of the building is very poor and unsafe. Local residents raised money some years ago to try and restore it, but restoration is needed again. We ended our trip in Iuka to visit with some family and friends. I'd like to visit Salem again, but next time, I want to see a haunted house!

Henry is in a Parade!!!

Henry and I visited Creal Springs, Illinois for the annual Wonder Water Reunion. On Saturday they had a parade. Henry joined the Creal Springs cheerleading team and helped them keep the beat to their music. He really enjoyed himself. He is shown in the picture with the squad in front of Creal Springs school which is close to 100 years old. Henry said he liked waving at everyone as we went by best. It made him feel like a celebrity!

Henry ain't nothin' but a "Hound Dog!"

I, Rebecca Owen, decided to take Henry to Memphis, TN. On Thursday September 20th, we drove to my boyfriend Jeff's house in south county (St. Louis, MO). We left for Memphis Friday morning, and were at the Memphis Zoo a few hours later! Henry loved seeing the Panda Bears from China, LeLe and YaYa! Mempis is one of only four zoos in the U.S. that has Pandas. We also saw a baby monkey with its parents, and polar bears swimming right in front of us (a glass wall).
Saturday morning we left the hotel room in search of Elvis Presley Blvd. We were on our way to Graceland. We toured Elvis Presleys, home, grave site, car museum, and boarded his plane named for his daughter, Lisa Marie. We were shocked to see so many people waiting to go on the tour, but learned that it is the 30th Anniversary of Elvis's death (August 16,1977). Jeff & I had a hard time getting Henry out of the gift shops! He loved the Elvis music, and his new favorite song is "Hound dog!" Henry liked taking pictures and being in them too! We had a great weekend, but Henry was ready to go back to IL.

Henry Visits Bradley University in Peoria!

I, Denell Scott, decided to take Henry with me on a trip to Peoria to visit my dad for Labor Day weekend. When we arrived, we relaxed for a while and then stuffed our bellies with yummy BBQ! Once we were nice and full, we took a short nap before driving to Bradley University's campus, which is only a few blocks from my dad's house. Henry and I walked around the campus and realized that our campus is much bigger than Bradley's. We stopped at the historical statue of Bradley's founder, Lydia Moss Bradley, and thought it would be a great opportunity for a picture. We left the campus shortly after and headed back on our long journey to Carbondale..Henry missed his school!
